Happy Fall, y'all! I'm going to be at a wedding on October 01st for my dear friend Hanny. I'm very excited to celebrate their love, and I am almost as psyched to be in Vermont again! Especially for the leaves. I am also super pumped to give them their wedding present, provided I get my (flat) behind in order and finish it in time.

Today I touched a patchouli plant outside Lorimer. I'm really, really tempted to splurge and buy one--the leaves smell so nice! And Matt Dzioba hates patchouli. Do you think I'll be lucky and it'll repel him? :-)

I really hope that my academic life isn't over forever, just undecided as to its next step. At least, that's what I came up with to keep this comic (^^^) from getting totally out of hand. In real life. In a department store.

And this comic (Britney Tribute Dancing) has happened already, just like all the other Fat Mallory strips I've done over the years. It also should be 09/08, but I guess if it's "and every other day", I'm only so wrong....

This last one is the biggest. It's very melodramatic, but then, it's also a pretty old strip. It's reassuring to see in my comics that I'm continually in a better and better place. Or something. What do people who don't make things do for that feeling? I hope that's not totally snotty sounding.

I'm so sorry I've not been posting comics. At first I was just slacking, but then I ran out of steam. Which is lame! And not cool of me. Too easily, the idea of catching up seemed so daunting, I couldn't tackle it... and it got worse and worse.

So here is the deal, comrades: if I take this summer off from comics & promise to start again in September, I'll spend the free time scanning my old stuff, bringing my site up to speed, and doing some neat little surprises and whatnot. Sounds like a plan, eh?

I always keep my promises. That said, I'm often very late with them, but I do deliver. With the new year and the bulk of the post-graduate culture shock behind me (I mean, after the grace period is up and I'm sending checks to Sallie Mae, things are pretty settled, huh?), I give you... daily diary strips! Enjoy.

I always worry about what I say in my comics being misunderstood--I know I have a tendency to get excited when I'm trying to make a point, to the extent where I often accidentally forget to make it. Normally I don't self-edit much (this is a diary, and I go into it knowing that by the time I get around to posting, I often feel differently), but occasionally I might rephrase things for the sake of clarity. Ta da!

Oh, and another thought. You all know that comic Mallory is an extension or an interpretation of me, and not necessarily reflecting how I think I look at all times, right? Adam pointed out my hair is usually not so curly (not at this length, anyway--rest in peace, Long Hair, and I will see you whenever you decide to start growing again). I just wanted to say I know. I think of Cartoon Mal as having very swirly hair (and almost no figure)!

I'm impressed with myself, only because I thought I was super tough for fitting 80 comics into one thing at age 18; now I've got almost 200!

Hooray, one thing down. I'm spending the rest of tonight working on my Rudolf Arnheim biography and comic representation of Art & Visual Perception--I'll slap them on the ole 'Circus when they're inked (I need to e.mail the lettered pages to my professor tonight).

Krissi has waited a little too patiently to appear in one of my comics. She's going to be in a few of the San Francisco strips, but I'm working on a short story (that'll hopefully go in the middle of The Future Is Now if I don't decide I hate it when 90% done) that features plenty more of my little lady. It's kind of like my (narcissist) diary strip after a few drinks--self indulgent and rambling and a little messy, but pretty honest. I hope I wind up liking it more so that I don't keep referring to it as such, but for now, that's too entertaining a metaphor to ignore.

I'm being a real trooper about all these comics, mostly because I have other work to do that isn't at all as fun or self indulgent. Boop boop she bop. I totally have encoding issues--I can absorb whatever you want to throw at me, but something goes awry when I try to spit it back out. I guess that's why summarizing my day in a comic is such a ridiculous project, but hey, are you complaining? No, you are not.

This week I think I was really fond of giving myself crazy eyes--and looking really tired. I guess it was a rough week, but it's really just been a rough semester. I'd look forward to summer, but ugh, there's too much Real Life involved. Anyone need a roommate or someone adorable (oh, and smart, that too) to work for them? I'm down for most situations. I just want a cat named Lobster.

Today I keep hacking like a 75 year old woman who's been smoking since she was 9, but hey, I feel good, and that's what matters.

I keep sort of making a paste with salt and water to stick on my schnoz overnight, because the salt helps draw out some of the worst in terms of pus or whatever junk needs to come out till my schnoz heals. I wake up looking like I have some kind of drug problem, though. I think this is the same part of me that used to pretend lollipop stems (?) were cigars as a kid.

Whenever I eat orange flavored candy, my taste buds take me back to elementary school, when I'd stay home from school sick, and my mom would crush up medicine in orange flavored Jello. Then I'd puke. I can't swallow pills, so every time I hold my breath and chew on my sertraline, I hope that when I pop a gummy vitamin (whatever) after, it's not orange flavored.

Christopher Wallace died thirteen years ago today. I wore my "RIP 4EVA" t-shirt my old roomie and friend Morgan got me for my 20th birthday. Who's the whitest white girl you know? Mallory.

I got my scanner's power cord in the mail!!! I got a month's worth of comics in my computer, but editing them so that they aren't full of gray fuzzies and stuff takes me awhile. I like to clean up my cartoons carefully. Add that to my spending my weekend in CT painting the upstairs with my mom a nice shade of "Kermit the frog green", and you should understand why I've only got about 9 comics for you tonight.

Remind me to avoid ever making plans on a Wednesday, ever again. Doing two weeks' worth of coloring in, scanning, and (crudely) fixing is a super-pain!

My friends are cuter in real life than the way I draw them. FYI, Nichki doesn't have this nose (I, however, have frizzy hair and glasses outside of cyberspace, too. I guess the only off thing in me & Cartoon Mal would be making my making my body look like it never hit puberty. Without sounding like a snot, that's just something I don't want to bring into my comics. I have a rule with myself, though, that if I am still making comics after I ever have kids, it might be appropriate to give me some boobs).

I don't know what the deal was with my hair and this when I scanned it, so I just made it all the same. Um, I know it looks a little weird.

Better late than never!

This is my father. You can tell the difference between him and Nate because he has a big beard (to the point where I do not draw him with a mouth), and Nate has scruff. He also always has his flannel sleeves down, and Nate pushes them up his arms sometimes.

I really enjoy problems, I think. I sort of prefer trying to get noise out my backgrounds using Seashore (as opposed to, say, Photoshop). Cyber slumming it, I guess.

Tomorrow Nate & the Birdhouse are going to BURLINGTON, VERMONT to see our little Hanny boo boo! It is snowing in New England right now (of course, it is raining in New York), so I guess I am showing the girls a very traditional NE winter, as opposed to the fall foliage we had planned... but whatever, we will make do! Forward march! I'm excited. I'm (planning on) making 12 dozen cookies for the road/for my girl/for my taste buds. Let's see. 12x12= 144, right? Isn't that a gross? A gross of cookies sounds awful, though!

Hmm!

When I was a senior in high school (2005-2006), I was in a publishing class, where we put out each month's school newsletter. It was pretty dang fun, because we printed each issue in the room on this old machine after "burning" the issue on to metal plates with chemicals. One of the assignments of that class was to make a "book", and for the hell of it I drew a comic a day about something that had happened to me, like James Kochalka does. So eventually I bound it up into a book, and I was really proud of it!
Now I'm finishing up my last year of college, and I'm in a class called "Words & Pictures" at SLC where I need a conference project, so I'm planning on doing the same thing all over again, and seeing what's changed. My "Mallory character" (ugh, ugh, ugh) has changed a lot over four years, so it's all really exciting to me.

I think I want to make hash browns, but I also have perogies... and no sour cream. I wasn't really thinking at the grocery store the other day.
